Despite the doubters of my exciting email . . . I got a new toy!

Still sealed in its box

The Raspberry Pi is a computer on a board the size of a credit card. Its aim is to get kids into “real” computer science (as opposed to ICT). It’s a pretty powerful little thing. It has 256Mb RAM and according to the website is the equivalent of a 300MHz Pentium 2 with XBox 1 graphics. It has a dedicated GPU that can be programmed using OpenGL ES. I’m looking forward to programming some graphics on it. All this for the bargin price of around £25.

I can’t use it yet because I’m waiting for a bunch of peripherals to be delivered, but I’m hoping to be able to use it at an Institute of Physics event in June. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about it once I can do more than gaze at it in its sealed anti-static bag.
