Today we took my niece and nephew to see Ice Age 4. I love computer animated films, and although I tend to prefer the films from pixar, dreamworks have spun ice age out over four films now so I guess they must be doing something right.

Pirates are cool these day, right?

This time, we see the evolution of the family group as the father figure is overprotective of the daughter who struggles choosing the lure of hanging out with the fickle cool kids over true friendship. At the same time the group is separated and against all odds they have to find their way back to each other, and there are some new pirate characters too.

I enjoyed the film and there were some genuinely funny moments, although I can help but think that maybe Dreamworks should move on a little faster and give us completely fresh ideas. With the exception of Toy Story Pixar consistently give something completely different, and I think that works well – although I suppose when you’re developing software and models and already have a winning formula it’s always tempting to get the most out of your investment.

Ice Age 4 has a lot going for it and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the other films in the series, but I think it’s time for Dreamworks to move on and finish on a high rather than follow the same path that the 1988 film The Land Before Time did. I have very fond memories of The Land Before Time. The Land Before Time XIII: The Wisdom of Friends? – not so much.
