Today I stumbled upon this video. In recognition of what would have been Alan Turing’s 100th birthday some clever chaps have created a version of the Turing Machine made entirely from Lego. Alan Turing is often credited with the title “the father of modern computer science” and built a machine, the Turing Machine was developed to help decipher the German encrypted radio messages and win the war.

I think that this would be an excellent reach out activity to get school kids more interested in computer science. With some careful planning they could learn about the architecture of a computer, wrapped up in the context of Alan Turing’s compelling story, and have fun building something together.

Now, I wonder if the Head of Department will buy me the bits…
